Candela Calculator
CANDELA CONVERTER
Use the calculator below to convert an exisiting detector sensitivity factor, either in foot-candles or Lux, into a new sensitivity factor for measuring Candela or Effective Candela (flashing sources, IL1700 only) at a chosen distance or to convert an exisiting measurement value , either in Lux or foot-candles, into Candela or Effective Candela (flashing sources, IL1700 only). Please note: Effective Candela is beam intensity of flashing sources (the human eye is 5 times more sensitive to a flashing source). The IL1400 is not intended to measure flashing sources and cannot be used to measure effective Candela.
To use this calculator:
Enter a sensitivity factor from your detectors calibration certificate, either in Lux or foot-candles or a measurement value you have taken either in foot-candles or Lux. Please note: Your detector's sensitivity factor is on your certificate and will be in scientific notation and will have units of (amps)(m2)(lumens-1) for Lux or (amps)(ft2) (lumens-1) for foot-candles and are right after the statement "(YIS) Photopic Illuminance Response Sensitivity Factor...) on your certificate. In the example below, the 1.34e-06 is a sensitivity factor in foot-candles.
Select which type of conversion you are making, sensitivity factor or a measurement.
Enter the distance. If you are converting a sensitivity factor or a measurement in foot-candles, then enter the distance in feet. If you are converting a sensitivity factor or a measurement in Lux, then enter the distance in meters. In the example below, because we used a sensitivity factor of 1.34e-06 (amps)(ft2)(lumens-1) which is foot-candles, the distance must be entered into the converter in feet, in the case of this example, the distance is 3.281 feet. Had we used a factor in Lux, the distance would have to be entered into the converter in meters, in the case of the same example distance, 3.281 feet is 1 meter so we would have entered 1 as the distance.
Click the Calculate button to convert your sensitivity factor or measurement to Candela or Effective Candela (flashing source, IL1700 only). Press the Reset button to return the calculator to the default values. Hit the Print button to print the calculator results.
If you are converting a sensitivity factor, then program the new sensitivity factor, in (Amps)(Candela-1) or (Amps) (effective Candela-1) into your IL1400 or IL1700 meter. Effective Candela is beam intensity of flashing sources (the human eye is 5 times more sensitive to a flashing source). The IL1400 is not intended to measure flashing sources and cannot be used to measure effective Candela.
