UV light is often used during the packaging process to reduce the amount of food borne microbes and assure fresher, healthier, longer lasting products. The UV germicidal application started with drinking water and have recently expanded. Pumpable fruit and vegetable products have discovered that UV is suitable for reducing the microbial load without changes to the taste and flavor that pasteurization can cause.   Other UV testing involves assuring packaging is light blocking to assure freshness is maintained after packaging. This application is often called photodegredation
